About 75% of employees consider their boss the most stressful part of their jobs. While those difficult bosses display traits like narcissism or impulsivity, perfectionism is another highly common trait. Here are a few things you can do to make working with a perfectionist boss easier.

• Let them see your efforts: Be consistent and reliable. Show your boss that you are as motivated and dedicated as they are. Make them feel like “a part of the plan.” Write down your goals, how you will reach them, and then ask your boss for feedback to make sure you are aligned.
• Set boundaries: Your boss will certainly get on your nerves sometimes. It’s normal to feel frustrated or angry. Let yourself experience these emotions, but do your best to leave them at work and protect your home. Give yourself time and space to recover and engage in activities that comfort you and bring you joy.
• Know your support resources: Your boss may not be a great resource for you, but your team may be facing similar problems. Make an effort to reach out to trusted colleagues and exchange your views and strategies around how you handle stress.
• Know that it’s okay to go: You may be the person who’s doing everything they can to get along with a perfectionistic boss (and probably are). However, no one should accept harmful circumstances or stay in situations that make them question their integrity or constantly put themselves down.
